ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Senegal, Aïssatou Ciss is a renowned photographer who lives and works between Gorée Island and Dakar.
Trained in law, she honed her skills on film sets before fully embracing photography as a means of expression—telling both her own stories and those of others. Themes of identity, transmission, and memory archiving are central to her work. Her first photographic series explored different stages of her childhood.
Deeply connected to her homeland, she captures its essence, inviting viewers to slow down and observe life’s fleeting moments. Her introduction to fine art photography came through the Rencontres Internationales d'Art Contemporain organized by LES ATELIERS SAHM in Brazzaville.
She has exhibited internationally in Greece, Italy, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Senegal, and recently in Belgium. Currently, as part of the TRAME program at the Cité Internationale des Arts, she is working on themes of exile—documenting the experiences of Africans across the continent, including Cameroonians, Tunisians, and Beninese, who bear the complex realities of both voluntary and involuntary displacement.
